First organizing meeting against the COP15 on biodiversity on September 11

Sunday September 11 at noon at the A-M050 of 'Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM).

While the attacks of the various police forces against indigenous peoples who defend the last inches of their territories continue, our governments are announcing with great fanfare the hosting of the COP15 on biodiversity from December 7 to 19 in Tio'tia:ke (Montreal), a conference where UN member states discuss their environmental policies. The hypocrisy is at its peak as the crisis is upon us. This international summit threatens our ability to take collective control of our future and to avoid the worst of the ecological catastrophe in two ways. The worst case scenario would be that it succeeds in making people believe that the 12,000 delegates really want to protect the 500 plant and animal species that are disappearing every day. The economic and political system that led us to this crisis could then continue its march of destruction in peace, and its harmful policies would be cemented in an international consensus.

But there is another threat: that of making the world's population glued to their screens believe that only specialists paid by the capitalists and the States can really change anything. But governments have never moved an inch without the threat of the population. Without popular protest, biodiversity will give way to economic growth, and we will continue to sink into catastrophe.  This is precisely the agenda of this COP15: to profit from biodiversity, without regard to the preservation of species and especially without questioning the current agro-industrial model.

This is why COP15 is in fact a threat to biodiversity: governments will continue to pretend that they are taking care of everything, while our economic system is leading us to disaster. To let COP15 happen is to give governments a blank check, to accept that the wolves are watching the sheepfold, to recognize that life is worth less than profits.

The purpose of the meeting will be to agree on common ground for the establishment of an anti-capitalist, anti-colonial, anti-patriarchal and anti-racist resistance group operating on the principles of direct democracy.
