During the 2019 federal election campaign we learned, with some surprise, that it was the Bloc Québécois who was responsible for the shutting down of the Energy East project. It was not the hundreds of petitions, protests, blockades and sabotages that led to the withdrawal of the project, no! It was the Bloc Québécois [1], the same Bloc who is currently trying to sell us another pipeline. A gas pipeline this time : The Énergie Saguenay of GNL Quebec [2].

What the Bloc did was nothing new. It is a form of “greenwashing”, presently popular among our elected officials. This particular form of greenwashing steals the work done in local struggles in order to gain a few votes. And our elected stooges do it because it works!

The Anticapitalist Convergence (Convergence des luttes anticapitalistes, CLAC-"Montreal") now publishes its articles on the Contrepoints.media news platform, available at https://contrepoints.media/ in addition to its own website. The objective of the Contrepoints.media project is to offer a mobilization platform for small and large collectives, and to avoid the repetitive effort necessary to produce and maintain various websites. 1. GOVERNMENTS WON’T SAVE US

Those who benefit from poisoning the land and exploiting people you care about won’t be reformed. They’ll make it seem like they hear your voices and occasionally put on grand spectacles to temporarily appease your anger. They’ll encourage you to channel your anxiety into pointless practices that only reinforce individualism. So while some of us compete to take shorter showers or to reduce our trash output, government officials, universities, and corporations shamelessly invest in more pipelines, host uncritical academic conferences, or fly jets to fancy meetings where empty promises are made.

The fight against climate change must break out of its rut. It must also fight the system of borders which benefits certain lives more than others. It must crush this capitalist economy which is always looking to produce more, more and more. It must fight the migrant prison being built in Laval, in which children are raised behind bars. It must fight imperialism which forces countries of the South to produce for a pittance what we consume here in the North. It must fight white supremacy, whether it takes the form of neo-fascist militia, conservative talking heads, or colonial governments which impose their law on unceded native lands. It must fight those who benefit from poisoning the Earth and from the exploitation of our sisters and brothers.
